Gated Communities in Williamsburg, VA

5 great choices for active retirement lifestyles near Williamsburg

By: Susan Smith

There is a wide variety of options for gated communities in the Williamsburg area. These would suit the needs and desires of many active seniors. The following is an overview of these neighborhoods.

Kingsmill On The James is a vibrant resort community, less than three miles from Colonial Williamsburg, and located on a 2900 acre protected area along the historic James River.  Forty percent of the rolling green and wooded development will remain untouched. The two gated entrances are manned round the clock and there is a private police force.

There is a wide variety of  housing choice available for residents in Kingsmill, as the development is not age restricted. These range from condos, townhouses, and courtyard/ patio/ villas on smaller lots to smaller single family and large luxury homes, many with first floor master suites. Many of the homes were designed, however, with seniors in mind.

There are six restaurants on site, including two dining facilities in the Clubhouse, 54 holes of golf with a golf club house, and a tennis club with fifteen courts. There is a superb sports club with both indoor and outdoor pools, racquetball courts, sauna, and fitness rooms. There is also a full service spa and a large marina on the river with access to the bay. The full service marina has 90 permanent slips and 15 transient boat slips.

There is as much to do as one could wish, with all of these facilities plus the many and varied club options open to residents. Or you can relax in your choice of housing and enjoy the gorgeous grounds and views.

Ford’s Colony is wonderful gated golf community, non-age restricted, but with many housing options that would suit the lifestyle of an active senior resident. It is located off Longhill Road, on the west side of Williamsburg, and a short drive to Colonial Williamsburg. There is full security, with four resident entrances/egresses off various sides of the development.

Housing options range from condos to single family houses of varying styles, many on one level or with first floor masters.

Amenities abound in this community, from long walking and bike trails over the lovely wooded terrain to clubs for different levels of interest. There are three golf courses within the community itself, two tennis clubs with clay and asphalt courts and two Jr. Olympic size swimming pools.

The Ford's Colony Country Club offers three dining options. The main dining room, elegantly decorated in Georgian stlyle, has been recognized as AAA Three Diamond. Other eating options are the more casual Members Only Grille or Harry’s Tavern, all located at the Club. You can go from golfing to eat or head out for a formal meal in the evening, all at a lovely facility, and then return to your home without leaving your subdivision.

Governor’s Land at Two Rivers is secured, but not officially gated. It does have a gatehouse and around the clock security and patrols. The spectacular 1,400 acre development has four miles of shore-line and 200 acres of marsh and woodlands and borders both the James and Chickahominy Rivers. It is a neighborhood for all ages with single family homes of traditional style in varied sizes. Many homes have first floor masters which will accommodate the needs of some seniors.

The amenities are innumerable at Governor's Land. The large Clubhouse offers waterfront dining with  superb food and spectacular sunsets and has event facilities.
